Bobby – Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia

The Bollywood movie Bobby (1973) is known for its iconic status. It was a movie with almost all the ‘firsts’. It introduced Bollywood to the idea of teenage romance with the backdrop of rich versus poor. It was the debut movie for Dimple Kapadia and the first leading role for Rishi Kapoor. The film is often remembered with the rocking song “hum tum ek kamre mein band ho“.

Bobby was written by Kwaja Ahmad Abbas, V.P. Sathe and Jainendra Jain. It was produced and directed by the legendary Raj Kapoor. The film went on to become a blockbuster and was the second highest grossing film of the 1970s. It went on to win 7 prestigious awards including Filmfare’s best actor and actress to Rishi and Dimple.

Veteran actor Prem Nath played Dimple’s father in Bobby. His son, Prem Krishen Malhotra is the founder of Cinevistaas Limited. Cinevistaas is a film and television production company which has produced films such as Yeh Mohabbat Hai and Garv: Pride and Honor. It has also produced hit shows such as Dill Mill Gaye, Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Behna Hain and Junoon. The current show that it is producing is Dil Dosti Dance. The company was founded in 1993 and has since produced around 58 shows and films.

Another interesting tidbit is that Prem Krishen Malhotra is related to Raj Kapoor. His paternal aunt, Krishna, was married to Raj Kapoor. Malhotra’s daughter, Akanksha is an actress and was launched by his home production in the film, Yeh Mohabbat Hain. Son, Siddarth is a film director who made his debut with Dharma Production’s We Are Family.

Often an unexplored territory, it is interesting to see how film families are often connected not only by business ties, but by family relations. Did you know about the connection?
