The new offering from Star Plus, Mehndi Hai Rachne Waali, which marks the debut of the popular Tollywood actors Sai Ketan Rao and Shivani Khedekar on Hindi television was successful in creating a hype for itself from the promos but the first episode of the show was not as much impressive as we expected it to be!
First, let’s talk about what we loved about the first episode –
• The introduction of characters, a glimpse of their life was not just with words but accompanied with action. For example, the female protagonist, Pallavi is a widow and to disclose this fact about her, the help of a rain sequence was taken along with an outsider to represent the still existing centuries old mentality that a widow is supposed to wear only white colour.
• The symbolisms and foreshadow gave us an insight on what is in the store ahead for the audiences’. For instance, when Pallavi was on her way back home and a little girl comes towards her to sell vermilion ( sindoor ) notices Pallavi’s white saree and hides what she was about to offer. The girl then runs away to the car that stops right then which belongs to the male protagonist of the show, Raghav Rao who bought the vermilion just for the sake of the little girl and throws it off later only to colour Pallavi’s white saree, “Red!” As Raghav’s car zooms off, some mud also lands on Pallavi’s saree which implies, happiness will tag along something sad too. In other words, Raghav and Pallavi’s marriage won’t be a bed of roses, it will have it’s fair share of thorns too.
• The cinematography deserves a special mention for capturing the essence of Hyderabad so beautifully.
• Last but not the least, the lead actors are good at their art. We don’t know about the chemistry yet but they definitely would look good together.
What We Did Not Like –
It might be too early to say this but the first impression of the three main characters that were introduced today was not really good. The male protagonist, Raghav is the typical rich guy, filled with ego and attitude who first tries to scare off the goons with just his name but when it comes to using his hands and legs, he can do that too pretty well. We can actually name too many characters from Indian television with that character sketch so yeah, nothing new there, at least for now!
The female protagonist, Pallavi seemed like the typical daily soap bahu who instead of taking a stand for herself, chose to listen to an outsider telling her what to wear and what not to. In fact, when her colleague Krishna tried to speak up in her favour, Pallavi stopped her saying, she would happily wear a white saree if that’s what makes Krishna’s mother happy. Again, too cliché!
And, the third important character that we see in the first episode is, Pallavi’s mother-in-law who treats her like her daughter and wants to see her getting married again. Do we have to repeat or you guys understood that the list of such MIL on Indian television is a long one?
All in all, the first episode was Okay-ish for us but we really hope, the show picks up in the future episodes.
